Title | BANK NOTES: RECORD OF DEAD NOTE ACCOUNT |
Date | 27 Oct 1915 - 29 Oct 1941 |
Admin History | The Dead Note Account was opened in anticipation of the Bank Act, 19 July 1844. A preliminary account was made 8 April 1843, in which all outstanding notes dated prior to 1 January 1822 were assumed no longer to be in circulation ('dead'): £327,516: 17:2 in all. On 6 October 1843 any notes dated prior to 1 January 1827 were added. From 31 August 1844 to 1860, all notes 15 years old and upwards and still outstanding were deemed 'dead'. After a period of uncertainty, the Bank Act 1892 resolved doubts as to the legality of the procedure adopted by providing that notes 40 years outstanding should be transferred to this account. |
Description | Total of old Notes outstanding together with payment details. Broken down between various periods of issue. |
