Activity | Educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, Cunliffe, along with his two brothers, set up the merchant bank Cunliffe Bros in 1890. He became a Director of the Bank in 1895, Deputy Governor in 1911, and Governor in 1913. His actions in averting a crisis at the outbreak of the First World War resulted in him being asked to stay on as Governor beyond the normal two-year term of office. However after a row with the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1917, he was forced to retire. |
