Title | 3rd Earl of Cromer |

Epithet | called Rowley; Governor (1961 - 1966) |
Activity | Educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Cromer (KG 1977, GCMG 1974, PC 1966) served with the Grenadier Guards during the Second World War. After the War he spent a year in New York with Kidder Peabody and J.P. Morgan and was appointed a partner in Barings in 1948. In 1959 Cromer was appointed the Economic Minister and Head of the UK Treasury and Supply Delegation at the British Embassy in Washington. Cromer served only one term as Governor, from 1961 until 1966. His period in office was a difficult one because of the international pressures on sterling, and he did not see eye to eye with the Labour Government and particularly Harold Wilson, the Prime Minister. After leaving the Bank, Cromer returned to Barings, and in addition held various other directorships. In 1971 Cromer was appointed British Ambassador in Washington, where he stayed until 1974. |
