ActivityWilliam Maurice Allen was born on 16 April 1908 and educated at Dulwich College and the London School of Economics (LSE). He became an Assistant Lecturer at the LSE in 1929, and was a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1931 to 1948. After serving as a temporary principal in the Ministry of Supply from 1939 to 1940, he joined the Royal Corps of Signals as a Signalman. He was commissioned in the Intelligence Corps in 1941, and became a Lt Colonel in 1944. He was an Assistant Director of Research with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1947 to 1949, before joining the Bank as an Assistant Adviser in 1950. He became Adviser to the Governors in 1954, and was a Director of the Bank from 1964 until his retirement in 1970. He was a visiting Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford, from 1954 to 1962. He also served on the Court of the London School of Economics and on the council of the Royal Economics Society. He died on 26 May 1988.
