ActivityEducated at Eton, Hambro served in the Coldstream Guards during the First World War, winning a Military Cross. He was closely involved with the family firm, C.J. Hambro & Son (from 1921, Hambros Bank), and he was also a Director of the Great Western Railway (1928 - 1945). Hambro joined the Court of the Bank as a Non-Executive Director in 1928 and from 1932 to 1933 was an Executive Director. He refused the chance to succeed Montagu Norman as Governor in 1937. Hambro continued to serve as a Non-Executive Director until 1963.
