| Activity | Hanbury-Williams was an industrialist who had a long association with Courtaulds, as Managing Director, Deputy Chairman, and Chairman. He joined the Court of the Bank of England as a Non-Executive Director in 1936, and was an Executive Director from 1940 to 1941. In 1949 the Chancellor of the Exchequer offered Hanbury-Williams the post of Governor (in succession to Lord Catto) but he refused, and the job went to Cameron Cobbold. Hanbury-Williams continued to serve as a Non-Executive Director until 1963. |
