Activity | Born 31 December 1939 and educated at Chesterfield School and Queen's College, Cambridge, Walker joined HM Treasury in 1961 where he was Private Secretary to the Joint Permanent Secretary from 1964-1966, before being seconded to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 1970-1973. He was an Assistant Secretary from 1973 to 1977 after which he joined the Bank as a Chief Adviser. He became Head of the Economic Intelligence Department, and was Assistant Director (Economics, Financial Statistics and Industrial Finance Divisions). In 1982 Walker was appointed Executive Director with responsibility for finance and industry. From 1985-1988 he was Chairman of Johnson Matthey and from 1992-1994 Deputy Chairman of Lloyds. He left the Bank in 1988 to be Chairman of the Securities and Investment Board (SIB) (1988 - 1992), and he remained as Non-Executive Director of the Bank until 1993. He has held numerous other directorships and senior positions, in particular with Morgan Stanley. |
