ActivityRootham was educated at Tonbridge School and St John's College, Oxford before joining the Civil Service. He worked in HM Treasury and was Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (1938 - 1939). In 1946 Rootham joined the Bank as an Acting Assistant Adviser, becoming an Adviser to the Governors in 1957. He was Chief of Central Banking Information Department (1963 to 1964), Chief of Overseas Department (1964 to 1965) and then became an Assistant to the Governors. Rootham retired from the Bank in 1967. He was Deputy Chairman, Agricultural Mortgage Corporation, 1973-77.
