ActivityStamp joined the Civil Service in 1896, starting as a clerk in the Inland Revenue. A self-taught economist, he took an external degree at the University of London in 1911, and wrote academic papers and books. In 1919 Stamp became a director of chemical firm Nobel Industries, and in 1926 he moved to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) where he became Chairman. He joined the Bank of England as a Non-Executive Director in 1928. At the start of the Second World War, Stamp was appointed to head the Government Economic Co-ordination Committee, however he was killed in an air raid in 1941.
