Activity | William Beardmore & Co Ltd was established in Glasgow in 1871. Under Sir William Beardmore (later Lord Invernairn) the firm expanded rapidly into steel production, shipbuilding, armaments and munitions. After the end of the war, Sir William's enthusiasm for expansion and development was unabated, but in difficult economic conditions the company ran into serious difficulties and by 1926 it faced bankruptcy. Various reconstruction schemes were mooted in 1929 the Bank of England agreed to advance against or purchase £725,000 of new debentures at the issue price, and also made an advance of £100,000 to keep the company going. There followed a period of reconstruction and winding down as Beardmore's various assets were sold. The final remnants of the company were wound up in 1975. |
