ActivityHankey worked for his father's firm of West Indian merchants and was a Director of the Bank from 1835 until 1848. He was Deputy Governor from 1849 until 1851 and Governor between 1851 and 1853. Hankey was Liberal MP for Peterborough (1853-68, 1874-80). His great-nephew Ernest Harvey was Deputy Governor of the Bank from 1929 to 1936.
