ActivityStanley Walden Payton joined the Bank in 1946 having spent the war years in the Fleet Air Arm. He undertook a mission to Ghana in 1951 to examine the possible need for a central bank, which was followed in 1954 by a study of development planning in Iraq led by Sir Arthur Salter. He held a post as United Kingdom (UK) Alternate on Managing Board of European Payments Union (EPU) in Paris from 1957 to 1959, and as an Adviser from 1959 to 1960. In 1960 he moved to Jamaica to establish a central bank there, of which he was the Governor until 1965. Stanley returned to London, briefly as an Adviser, and in 1965 became Deputy Chief of Overseas Department. In 1975 he succeeded Roy Fenton as Chief of Overseas Department. He retired in 1980.
