Corporate Name | Bank of England Exeter Branch |
Dates | 1827 - 1834 |
Activity | First discussed in May 1827 and finally opened in a house at 18 Southernhay Place on 17 December that year. The house had been built in around 1797 and the necessary repairs and alterations were carried out by John Soane, the Bank Architect. The first Agent at Exeter was Henry Septimus Hyde Wollaston and George Chaplin Holroyd was appointed as Sub-Agent. From the start there was local opposition to the branch and, coupled with the unwise location of the branch on a quiet road of private residences, business was slow and it consistently worked at a loss. Industrially, Exeter was in decline and so, when in 1834 branches at Portsmouth and Plymouth were suggested for the convenience of the Navy, Exeter was closed on 30 April 1834 and its small business transferred to Plymouth. The premises were sold by the Bank to Messrs Cole & Holroyd, Bankers. |
