Activity | Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co Ltd was a major manufacturing company founded in 1847. Headquartered in Elswick, Newcastle upon Tyne, Armstrong Whitworth engaged in the construction of armaments, ships, locomotives, automobiles, and aircraft.
Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd was an engineering conglomerate formed by the merger of the assets of Vickers Limited and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Company in 1927. The business covered armaments, shipbuilding, military vehicles, aviation, and marine engines. The majority of the company was nationalised in the 1960s and 1970s, with the remainder being divested as Vickers plc in 1977.
The rest of the assets which were not transferred to Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd in 1927 remained with Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth and Co Ltd and in 1929 it changed its name to Armstrong Whitworth Securities Co Ltd. It was a holding company for two new companies Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co (Shipbuilders) Ltd and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co (Engineers) and two other subsidiaries, Eros Steamships Ltd, and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Co (Ironfounders) Ltd were later formed. The Bank of England had a controlling interest in the company. Liquidation started in 1943 and final payments were made in 1945, though complications meant that matter then dragged on until 1949. |
