Activity | Towards the end of the nineteenth century the Société des Quais, Docks et Entrepots de Constantinople, known to the British as the Constantinople Quays Company, gained a concession to construct and manage quays and docks on both sides of the port of Constantinople. In 1906, for reasons of diplomacy, viz protecting Britain's economic interests in the Ottomons, HM Treasury (HMT) requested that the Bank buy £375,000 of shares in the Constantinople Quays Company, the votes to be exercised as HM Government (HMG) directed and HMT guaranteeing a return of 3½ % pa. HMT refused to guarantee the principal (on the grounds that it could not guarantee its successors) and when the company was liquidated in 1935 refused to make good the Bank's £172,000 loss. |
