ActivityThe Anglo Austrian Bank was incorporated in Austria in 1863 by a group of British financiers. It aimed to be both a government bank and a commercial bank with a branch network. In 1914 it encountered difficulties and was supported by the Bank of England. In 1922 it was wound up and its business transferred to the newly formed Anglo-Austrian Bank Ltd in which the Bank of England was a large shareholder. It continued to operate an extensive branch network in Austria, Czechoslovakia and neighbouring countries. The Czech business was transferred to the Anglo-Czecho-Slovakian Bank in 1926, and Austrian branches were also sold to the Credit Anstalt of Vienna. In the same year the Anglo-Austrian Bank amalgamated with the British Trade Corporation (est. 1916) to form the Anglo-International Bank Ltd.
