Corporate Name | Royal Dutch/Shell Group |
Dates | 1907 - |
Activity | The Royal Dutch/Shell Group comprised two public holding companies, one British ("Shell" Transport and Trading Company Ltd) the other Dutch (Royal Dutch Petroleum Company). Beneath the holding companies were two main operating companies, one British (Shell Petroleum Ltd), the other Dutch (Shell NV) through which the Group's activities were controlled. Shell Transport & Trading owned 40% of Shell Petroleum Ltd and 40% of Shell NV; Royal Dutch owned 60% of Shell Petroleum and 60% of Shell NV, so the ownership of the Group was thus 40% British, 60% Dutch. Exploration, crude oil production and research was the responsibility of Shell NV, and refining, distribution, marketing and later production the responsibility of Shell Petroleum Ltd.
The Shell/Treasury agreement, negotiated in May 1946, provided that Royal Dutch/Shell Group was treated for exchange control purposes as a 100% UK resident. In return Royal Dutch/Shell agreed to keep its central reserve funds in sterling in London. Following the devaluation of settling in November 1967 the Group wanted to diversify its central funds. |
