ActivityIn 1893, when the indiscretions of the then Chief Cashier, Frank May, came to light, it became apparent that the internal checks on the Bank's working procedures were inadequate. Accordingly, the Audit Department was formed in the following year to carry out frequent and regular audits and to report the findings directly to the Governors. Around 1970 the role of the unit was expanded to include control procedures for the Bank's computer systems. In 2004 the name of the unit changes to Internal Audit Division.
