ActivityEducated at Rossall School, and Christ Church, Oxford, Fforde served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. He was a Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford before joining the Bank as an economics expert in 1957. He was Deputy Chief of the Central Banking Information Department (1959 - 1964) and an Adviser to the Governors (1964 - 1966) before he became Chief Cashier for a four year period from 1966 to 1970. From 1970 to 1982 Fforde was Executive Director for Home Finance. After this he returned to an advisory position and was commissioned to write the third volume of the Bank's official history. This book, 'The Bank of England and public policy 1941 - 1958' was published in 1992.
