Code | DS/UK/85 |
Corporate Name | Bank of England Portsmouth Branch |
Dates | 1834 - 1914 |
Activity | In January 1834 the Treasurer of the Navy requested that new branches be opened in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Chatham and Pembroke to facilitate the supply of money to the dockyards. The Bank agreed to open two branches in Plymouth and Portsmouth, which opened on 16 May at 26/27 High Street, moving to 109 High Street in 1839. Charles Edward MacCarthy was appointed as its first Agent. The branch was eventually closed on 30 April 1914 because of the declining business and the fact that the Navy's cash requirements could by then be met equally well from London. |
