Corporate NameBank of England Plymouth Branch
Dates1834 - 1949
ActivityIn January 1834 the Treasurer of the Navy requested that new branches be opened in Portsmouth, Plymouth, Chatham and Pembroke to facilitate the supply of money to the dockyards. The Bank agreed to open two branches in Portsmouth and Plymouth, the latter taking over the business of Exeter branch, which was running at a loss. The branch opened on 1 May 1834 in a house in St Andrew's Terrace. Robert Morris, previously Sub-Agent at Swansea and Bristol was appointed Agent, continuing until 1867 when he retired at the age of eighty. The branch moved to George Street in 1844. There was a gradual decline in its usefulness and the necessity for complete rebuilding as a result of war damage finally led to its closure in 1949.
