Corporate Name | Bank of England Norwich Branch |
Dates | 1829 - 1852 |
Activity | Opening a branch at Norwich was first proposed in May 1827, but there was difficulty finding suitable premises at a reasonable price and it was not until the last day of 1828 that the Bank decided to purchase a house in Queen Street. On the 19 November 1829, George Welden and Edward Oxley were appointed Agent and Sub-Agent, although neither was available to start immediately and so when the branch finally opened on 1 December 1829, it was under the supervision of William Wilson Scrimgeour who had been acting Assistant Agent at Birmingham. Local opinion was against the opening of the branch and subsequent trading losses led to its closure on 31 May 1852. The Bank eventually sold the premises in 1854. |
