Activity | The Bank's Leicester branch was opened on 1 January 1844, following the failure of local banking firm Clarke, Mitchell & Co the previous year. The old banking house of Clarke, Mitchell & Co in Gallowtree Gate was purchased from their assignees and the branch opened for business with Mr T C Turner, Principal of the Branch Banks Office, being appointed as the first Agent. The branch subsequently worked at a loss and on 29 February 1872 the branch was closed and its business transferred to Birmingham. |
