Description | The Bank signed a £72 million loan agreement with the Bank of France in 1916, secured in part against gold deposited in London. This file appears to have been created as a working dossier to hold papers relating to the loan's final repayment in 1927; the bulk of the papers consist of copies of notes and correspondence relating to negotiations in 1927 and to the arrangements for repayment. However, the file also contains the tops of the original 1916 agreement signed by Pallain and Cunliffe, of HM Treasury (HMT), comfort letters, 1916, 1917 and 1923, and of the 1923 Supplemental Agreement (two signed copies) agreeing a repayment schedule, together with copies of the 1916 supplemental agreement and other supporting papers. |
