TitleGOVERNOR'S FILE: NEW ZEALAND - RESERVE BANK
Date8 Aug 1935 - 11 Mar 1951
Admin HistoryThe Bank acted as issuing house for New Zealand Government issues in the London market and was thus the market's natural point of contact on matters relating to New Zealand public sector issues.
DescriptionThe 1935 General Election brought Labour to power, the Reserve Bank was seen as the creature of the previous regime; the Reserve Bank Act was amended in 1936 to bring it more firmly under Government control. By 1938 New Zealand was in serious balance of payments difficulties and Lefeaux's relations with the Government were under strain. By early 1939 default looked a serious possibility. The 1939 Reserve Bank Amendment Act and Lefeaux's subsequent departure in 1940 are covered in this file. 1951 correspondence between Cameron Fromanteel Cobbold and Prime Minister Holland on the need to strengthen the Reserve Bank Board is in this file [and in G1/336].
