Title | GOVERNOR'S FILE: ROYAL MAIL CO, ATLANTIC STEAM NAVIGATION CO LTD, CLANLINE, AND UNION CASTLE MAIL STEAMSHIP CO LTD |
Date | 23 Jan 1934 - 29 Mar 1962 |
Description | Proposal to rationalise United Kingdom (UK) shipping lines to South America, particularly the Royal Mail Co. Establishment of the Atlantic Steam Navigation Co Ltd. Amalgamation of Clanline and Union Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd.
G1/82-96: These papers are concerned mainly with the financial troubles of the shipping industry during the early part of the 1930's. They have been arranged so far as possible under headings of the principal shipping companies involved but the affairs of all those companies - and others - became so intermingled that references to them appear throughout the whole series of papers. Other shipping companies, apart from those which appear as headings, to which frequent references are made are: The International Mercantile Marine; Shaw Savill; Albion Co Ltd; The White Star Line; Union Castle Mail Steamship Co Ltd; Elder Dempsterines; and mention is also made of two shipbuilding companies, namely John Brown & Co Ltd, and Harland & Wolff. |
