Title | SECRETARY'S FILES: SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON RISK MONEY |
Date | 15 Nov 1867 - 18 Dec 1902 |
Admin History | Until 1902, risk money was paid to clerks in the cash offices, notionally to compensate those who handled coin for the many deficiencies which inevitably occurred and which clerks were required to make good from their own pockets. The practice was at least 100 years old when this Committee met to consider the consolidation of risk money into ordinary pensionable salary. |
Description | The file contains a note from 1867 (which states that deficiencies had become rarer within the past 20-30 years 'due to the improvement in the class and character of the clerks and to the higher intelligence they bring to bear upon their duties'). Also a note by the Chief Cashier dated 1896 on who got it and evidence on the practice in other banks (probably 1902). |
