Description | William Lidderdale, Bertram Wodehouse Currie and Benjamin Buck Greene wrote down their recollections of how the Baring crisis broke in 1890 [G15/192 fols 176-183] from which it is possible to identify many of the papers in this file. Fol 3 is Currie and Greene's report to the Governor on Barings' solvency, on the basis of which it was agreed to set up the Guarantee Fund. The guarantee applied to liabilities at the close of business on 15 Nov 1890. Fol 5-12 represent Barings' statement of liabilities and assets at that date. Fol 13 is a copy of an undertaking from the partners of Barings to hold their property at the disposal of the Bank. Copies of an exchange of letters with the Chancellor reporting the success of the guarantee operation are filed at fol 22a. |
