TitleSECRETARY'S FILES: SPECIAL COMMITTEE ON ORGANISATION (PEACOCK COMMITTEE)
Date23 Apr 1931 - 15 Dec 1934
Admin HistoryThis Committee was set up in 1931 to consider the direction and management structure of the Bank. It led inter alia to formal abandonment of the rotation of the chairs, to the creation of Executive Directors, to the creation of the Establishments Department and to the abolition of a number of ancient survivals including the Committee of Daily Waiting, Directors Fines and the annual re-election of Staff. The Committee interviewed the Governors, the senior officials and the outside Directors and received much written evidence besides.
DescriptionThe papers shed much light on the routine organisation of work in the higher echelons and to attitudes on subjects as diverse as the handling of relations with Whitehall and Overseas Central Banks and the organisation of the filing system.
