TitleSECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT: PRIVATE MINUTE BOOK
Date1795 - 1844
DescriptionIncludes copies of some Court Minutes and a wide variety of material on various subjects, including:

Correspondence with William Pitt the Younger, regarding a proposed loan to Ireland, 1797; the shortage of gold and the consequent suspension of cash payments by the Bank, 1797; preparations by the Bank in response to the threat of invasion by Napoleon following the resumption of war with France in 1803; renewal of the Bank's Charter, 1833; correspondence regarding the acceptances of houses trading with the United States (US), 1837 (in relation to the 'panic' of that year); the proposed establishment of a branch bank of deposit in the West End of London, 1840 [this plan was later suspended but presumably was the forerunner to the Bank's Western branch which opened in 1855].

The minutes include several references to visits by royalty, including Duke and Duchess of Clarence, the Queen and the Royal family, the Persian Envoy, the Duchess of Cambridge, and the anticipated visit of the King of Prussia (engagement not fulfilled). Also includes detailed plans for a visit to the Bank by the Tsar's sister the Grand Duchess of Oldenburg, 7 April 1814.
