| Activity | Goschens and Cunliffe were established in 1814 as Fruhling and Goschen by W H Goschen whose son Viscount Goschen became Chancellor of the Exchequer. In 1920 the firm amalgamated with Cunliffe Brothers, Lord Cunliffe, ex-Bank Governor becoming a partner. The accepting house ran into difficulties in the mid-thirties largely on account of its heavy involvement in Germany and Hungary. In 1940 what remained of the firm's active business was absorbed by Guinness Mahon. The realisation of frozen and doubtful assets was managed by Guinness Mahon Executor and Trustee Company, the proceeds going to reduce the firm's indebtedness to the Bank. |
