TitleFEDERATION OF RHODESIA AND NYASALAND AND MEMBER COUNTRIES: DISSOLUTION OF FEDERATION
Date28 Jun 1963 - 3 Jul 1963
Admin HistoryThe Bank's main concern was with the Federation's Public Debt and its apportionment among the three territories. By early 1962 Malawi (Nyasaland) had made clear its wish to leave the Federation. Richard Austen Butler announced the British Government's acceptance of Malawi's wish late in 1962. In December of that year Taylor (Treasury [HMT]) and Leslie Alan Whittome (Bank) visited Salisbury in order to discuss the Federation's Debt. In Jun 1963, Butler presided over a conference at Victoria Falls. Dudley William Crawford Allen (Bank) was present. The conference set up a number of Committees (see OV64/35) including Sub Committee A on 'Assets and Liabilities'. Allen visited the Federation again in August 1963. Julius Basil Reid was a member of Sub Committee A. Richard Charles Henry Hallett (Bank) and Alan Gordon Perrin (Bank) went to Zambia (Northern Rhodesia) and Nyasaland (Malawi) in October as advisers to the territorial governments (later Governors of the Central Banks), and helped to handle the transfer of responsibility from the Federation Central Bank to the three territorial Central banks. The Federation was dissolved by SRO 1963 No 2085, 20 December 1963. The dissolution took effect on 31 December 1963.
