TitleTHE OLD LADY
Date1920 - 2000
DescriptionThe Old Lady is the quarterly staff magazine of the Bank. First published in 1921, by a group of literary-minded staff the magazine was from March 1922 until November 1978 the official organ of the Bank of England Library and Literary Association. The Editorship evolved from a group working part-time to the appointment of the first full-time Editor in 1935. The Publications Sub-Committee of the Library and Literary Association was ultimately responsible for the magazine. In time, the Old Lady evolved from its original concept into a staff magazine. It was therefore, on 15 November 1978 made independent of the Association, and a Staff Publications Committee, reporting to the Staff Director, was formed to take on the role of the original Sub-Committee.The publication is given an Establishment Department classification in the Archive only because the Editor is a member of that Department for administrative purposes.The magazine is a mixture of items of domestic interest - particularly sports reports, notes from Clubs and Societies, and letters from the Bank's Branches - and of other contributions, including articles, stories, poems, book reviews, theatrical criticisms, drawings and photographs. All issues contain obituaries and retirements, some contain appointments. An index to each year's numbers will be found at the front of the first issue for that year. The magazine ceased publication in December 2007.
The names and dates of the Editors are as follows:
L P Bonnet 1935-1939; John A Giuseppi and Beryl Langford 1939 - 1941; Beryl Langford 1941 - 1946; Richard Powers 1946 - 1952;
