| Admin History | Clerks nominated by Directors still had to appear in front of one of two Specialist Committees for the examination of candidates (the minutes of which can be found in M2 and M5). This is why the names of individual candidates will appear in both series of records. In his book 'The Bank of England From Within', p.356, William Marston Acres notes that the Chief Accountant was instructed 'not to send any clerk recommended by a Director to the Committee of which he may be a member.'
Court, 3 Jan 1799 - 'That at every election of Clerks the Governor be empowered to recommend for a preference to the election of Court the sons of such officers of the House, as shall have been 15 years or more in the service, provided their number do not exceed one sixth of those to be elected, and that they be found duly qualified by the Quarterly Committee, who are desired to undertake the Office of examining into the character and ability of each such person.'
Court, 21 Jul 1814 - 'That the son of a domestic servant be not eligible to be elected a clerk in the Bank.'
Note that candidates were to be aged 17-30. |
