Activity | Educated at Dulwich College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, Eddie George joined the Bank in 1962 where he worked mainly on East European matters. He was seconded to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) between 1966 and 1969, and was Assistant to Jeremy Morse (Chairman of the Deputies of the Committee of Twenty on international monetary reform) from 1972 to 1974. From the latter part of the 1970s, George built-up his expertise in the markets area as Deputy Chief Cashier (1977 - 1980) and Assistant Director, Gilt-Edged Division (1980 - 1982). In 1982 he was appointed Executive Director, Home Finance. George became Deputy Governor on 1 March 1990 and in 1993 he succeeded Robin Leigh-Pemberton as Governor. He served two terms as Governor and retired in 2003. |
