About the talk
Discover the remarkable life and legacy of Eleanor Coade, a businesswoman from the late 1700s, with our free gallery talks. Coade oversaw the production of an artificial material known as Coade Stone, which was often used in architectural decoration (including at the Bank of England).
The material was used by many famous architects, including John Soane, Robert Taylor, Robert Adam, and Capability Brown. Making Coade Stone was not a straightforward process: each stage of the process was carried out by specialist artists and craftspeople.
Discover some of the places where this remarkable material was used, and where it can still be seen today. The display also links to our current exhibition, Building the Bank, which explores the Bank’s architecture and how it changed during Baker’s transformation of the site.
