About the talk
When: 15 October, 6pm
The details of the 1781 Zong/Zorg massacre were exposed via a 1783 court case. By engaging with archival material, history scholarship, alongside visual art and creative writing, this talk considers the massacre and court case in relation to abolitionism, British history, and African diasporic (re)memory.
It draws firstly on a 1700s manuscript about Zong/Zorg court case, held at the Caird Library and Archives, which includes references to murder onboard the ship. It then considers how scholars have investigated the case before turning to the ways artists and writers have interpreted the historical evidence.
This talk is connected to the current temporary exhibition, ‘After the Fire: Insurance, finance and a rebuilt city’, presented by the Insurance Museum, which is free to visit in the Museum’s Stock Office. The talk takes place at 6pm during our late event, ‘After the Fire: a Museum late’.

About the speaker
Kristy Warren examines the history, remnants and legacies of colonialism. She is particularly interested in what the arts, commemoration, and material culture can tell us about these themes.
Essential information
- The event is free to attend, but booking is required. To attend the talk, please book via the button below.
- Tickets for this 6pm talk include admission into the Museum; you do not need to book a separate ticket to enter the Museum late.
- Tickets for our concurrent event, ‘After the Fire: a Museum late’, do not give admittance to this 6pm talk.
- Ticketholders (for both the talk and the late event) will receive priority entry over non-ticketholders if there is a queue at the Museum’s entrance.
- The talk will take place in the Museum's Learning Space, which is located at the back of the Museum adjacent to the Rotunda. A staff member at the Information Desk can advise on how to get there from the entrance.
- The talk will begin at 6pm. Please ensure you arrive promptly to the Museum’s Learning Space for this time and note that there is airport-style security at the Museum's entrance; we cannot guarantee admittance if you are late for the talk, even if you have booked a ticket.
- If you were unable to book a ticket, you may still be able to attend on the day. Please note however that walk in slots are offered on a first come, first served basis after ticket-holders have been seated and depend on venue capacity.
- Seating is unallocated, unless stated otherwise. We encourage arriving to the Learning Space at 5.45pm to get a good seat.
