Biography

Sebastian Walsh became Secretary of the Bank of England in May 2022. He is responsible for our governance and ethics. He is responsible for ensuring the organisation is well run and advises our Court of Directors, which performs the role of a board of directors.

He is also our conflicts officer and supports the Government when it makes appointments to our policy committees and Court of Directors.

Previously, Sebastian was our Chief Press Officer from 2019 to 2022.

He served as Press Secretary to Governor Mark Carney from 2016 to 2020. He also worked on the Fair and Effective Markets Review (2015), a joint review by the Bank of England, Financial Conduct Authority and HM Treasury into the operation of wholesale financial markets. 

Before he started working at the Bank of England in 2012, he was a journalist.

He holds a PhD in History from the University of Cambridge.
