Opportunities for university students to gain practical experience at the UK's central bank

Our programmes

  • This internship is designed for students in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree course. It takes place over the summer before you start your final year.

    This programme could be right for you if you are:

    • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
    • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK's central Bank
    • looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities at the Bank of England

    We are committed to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

    To apply, you must:

    • be in your penultimate year of your undergraduate degree
    • be expecting to get a 2.1
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent) 

    How you could develop

    We will assign you to a team, where you will work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

    You will learn more about our role in the economy and gain on-the-job skills. You will also have the opportunity to learn more by attending talks and networking events. 

    When you apply, we will ask if you have any specific areas of interest. Please note this is just an expression of interest, you are not applying to a specific area.

    If you are accepted, we could allocate you to one of the following areas: 

    • Payments
    • Markets
    • Strategic Change and Operations
    • Resolution
    • International
    • Financial Market Infrastructure
    • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
    • Central Bank Digital Currency
    • Prudential Policy
    • Insurance Supervision
    • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Development Programme or Postgraduate-year Internship.

  • This internship is designed for students in their final year of their undergraduate degree course, or the first year of a two-year master's. It takes place over the summer before you start your master's, or go into your final year of your master's.

    This programme could be right for you if you are:

    • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
    • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK's central bank
    • looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities

    • be in the final year of your undergraduate degree course and planning to study for a master's in economics or finance upon completion; or you should be in the first year of a two-year master's in economics or finance
    • be expecting or have achieved a 2.1 in your undergraduate degree
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)

    How you could develop

    We will assign you to a team, where you will work on a specific project closely with economists or analysts to collect and analyse data.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Development Programme. 

  • This programme is designed students of Black heritage in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree. If successful, you will receive funding of at least £5,000 towards living costs for one year at university. You will also be offered a paid internship for eight weeks. 

    This programme could be right for you if you are:

    • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
    • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK's central bank
    • looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities

    To apply, you must:

    • be in the final year of your undergraduate degree course and planning to study for a master's in economics or finance upon completion; or you should be in the first year of a two-year master's in economics or finance
    • be expecting or have achieved a 2.1 in your undergraduate degree
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)
