Get practical experience at the UK's central bank with our 13-month programme for undergraduates

Overview

  • This programme is designed for undergraduates with a placement year built into their course. 

    • length of contract: 13 months
    • start date: end of July
    • applications for 2026 opportunities are open and close at 12pm (midday) on Monday 24 November 2025 
    • location: London or Leeds offices (hybrid)
    • salary: London – £25,250/Leeds – £22,940, as well as our comprehensive benefits package

    To apply, you must:

    • be studying any undergraduate degree that allows you to do a placement year (starting from next summer)
    • be expecting to get a 2.1; you must not already have a degree; there are specific degree requirements for the Economist stream.
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)

    What to expect

    We have designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK's financial system. 

    First of all, we will introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you will work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You will also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

    If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Development Programme or Postgraduate Internship.

    How you could develop

    If you are interested in this programme, we will ask you to choose from the following streams:

    Operations

    This is our generalist stream, which is open to students from all degree disciplines. If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Strategic Change and Operations
    • Authorisations, Regtech and International Supervision

    Data

    Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective. If you apply to this stream, you will need to complete an online Excel test during the assessment centre.

    If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Data Analytics Transformation
    • Payments
    • Prudential Policy 
    • Supervisory Risk Specialists
    • Strategy, Risk and Operations

    Economics

    If you apply to this stream, you will need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

    If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Monetary Analysis
    • Centre for Central Banking Studies
    • Markets 
    • Financial Market Infrastructure
    • Prudential Policy
    • Supervisory Risk Specialists
    • Independent Evaluation Office

    Technology

    If you are interested in gaining hands-on experience working with our technical experts and getting involved in our projects, this stream could be for you. You don’t need a degree in computer science to apply. 

    You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

    • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
    • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
    • developing and presenting reports on change projects

    Supervision

    This stream involves supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. It is open to students from all degree disciplines.

    If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Supervisory, Risk and Operations
    • Authorisations, Regtech and International Supervision
    • UK Deposit Takers Supervision
