Internationally-renowned double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE is the founder of Chineke! - Europe’s first professional majority black and minority ethnic orchestra.

She will be ‘in conversation with’ our Chief Economist Andy Haldane on Tuesday 26 March 2019 at 4pm at the Bank of England. At this event you can ask Chi-chi about her prolific career and her work to inspire social change.

Chi-chi was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2001 and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2017, both for services to music.  In 2017, she received an Association of British Orchestras Award for the most important contribution to the orchestral life of the UK. In 2016, she was made an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Laban Conservatoire in recognition of her ‘pioneering contribution to music’.

She is named as one of Powerlist’s 2019 most influential black people in Britain. She is in the top ten in the Women in Music Power List in 2018 published by BBC Woman’s Hour and was the Black British Business Awards’ person of the year in 2016.

Chi-chi studied music at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Royal Society of Arts in Rome.
