Bank of England innovation in money and payments conference

Co-hosted with Warwick Business School

About the conference

Date: 3 and 4 September 2025

Location:

Day 1 – Warwick Business School, The Shard, London
Day 2 – Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, London

The Bank of England and Warwick Business School are co-hosting a conference for academics, central banks, international institutions and the payments industry to share ideas on how innovative solutions are changing the nature of money and payments.

The payments landscape has radically evolved over the last decade, with consumer preferences and technological developments changing the way households and businesses pay for goods and services. The Bank wants to continue to support innovation in money and payments while maintaining monetary and financial stability. It is vital that UK households, businesses and financial market participants can trust the money they hold and make payments with confidence.

Programme

The conference will bring together academics, central banks, international institutions and the payments industry to drive policy relevant discussions on the future of money and payments. We will facilitate the exchange of research and findings with practical insights. This will help promote academic research into real world applications and showcase innovative solutions for the future of money and payments.

The conference will consist of short academic presentations and collaborative discussion panels and presentations, with a keynote address from Sarah Breeden (Deputy Governor for Financial Stability, Bank of England).

The conference will cover themes such as:

  • the role of central banks in the future of retail money and payments
  • payment innovation as a catalyst for growth
  • global trends in retail payments
  • the role of interoperability in retail payments
  • users' interactions with payments and new forms of money

Call for academic submissions

We invite theoretical and empirical submissions on these issues. We are keen for a multi-disciplinary conference, and welcome submissions from a range of academic disciplines. However, submissions related to the following topics are especially encouraged:

  • the interactions between different forms of money
  • effects of new forms of money on the financial system eg CBDC, stablecoins, tokenised deposits
  • the role for public infrastructure in supporting innovation in money and payments
  • alternative approaches to ensuring interoperability between different forms of money
  • the trade-offs between usability and safety of money and payments
  • the role of payments innovation in driving economic growth
  • effects of digital identity on payment methods
  • what innovations can support an inclusive ecosystem
  • the appropriate balance between public and private money

The conference will take place in London on 3 and 4 September 2025 as an in-person event. There will be a series of academic paper sessions and panel events.
