About the conference

European Central Bank, Bank of Canada, Bank of England, Banco de España, Banque de France, and Banca d’Italia are organizing the Conference on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Economics, Finance, and Central Banking, to be held on 22 and 23 March 2027. The conference will be hosted by Banca d’Italia and will feature keynote lectures by Annamaria Lusardi (Stanford) and Alexandra Roulet (INSEAD).
Call for papers
We invite submissions presenting cutting-edge research on methods, measurement, and empirical analyses related to equity, diversity and inclusion (ED&I) across areas relevant to the economics and finance profession and to central banking activities. In particular, we seek to attract academic-style papers on topics including, but not limited to:
- ED&I and labour market outcomes: how diversity along dimensions such as gender, race, age, mental or physical disability status, and socio-economic background shapes labour market outcomes, particularly within the economics and finance professions and in relation to technological change.
- ED&I and financial markets: financial inclusion and the role of diversity in shaping households’ and firms’ financial behaviour, access to financial services, investment choices, borrowing decisions, risk-taking, and participation in financial markets.
- ED&I and monetary policy: how diversity and inclusion influence monetary policy and central banking, from internal decision-making processes to the heterogeneous effects of inflation and macroeconomic shocks across demographic groups.
Submissions from groups traditionally underrepresented in economics and finance are especially encouraged.
Submission and selection
The deadline for submissions is 30 October 2026. Authors are invited to submit their papers via Conference Maker. Submissions should be in the form of completed manuscripts. Contributions will be selected by the programme committee, which consists of researchers from eachof the six central banks. Authors selected to present will be notified by 30 November 2026.
Conference organisation
The conference will begin on the morning of Monday 22 March, and conclude in the early afternoon of Tuesday 23 March. It will take place at the headquarters of Banca d’Italia in Rome. The programme will feature presentations of academic research selected through this call for papers, contributions from Human Resources professionals from central banks, and a policy panel discussion. Participants are kindly expected to attend the conference in full.
The conference is sponsored by Banca d’Italia. There is no registration fee, and meals during the conference will be provided for all participants. Banca d’Italia will also cover travel and accommodation costs for all successful applicants from academic institutions, subject to a cap.
