Market Participants Group

A forum for sharing views on relevant themes and narratives in financial markets with members of the Monetary Policy Committee.

Overview

The Market Participants Group (MPG) is a senior-level forum for financial market participants in the UK to share their views on relevant themes and narratives in financial markets with members of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

We expect MPG to meet three to four times a year.

The group's objectives are to:

  • enable all MPC members to hear directly from external market participants on a regular basis, in addition to staff-led market intelligence
  • go hand-in-hand with the Bank’s Monetary Policy Transformation Programme’s work to support good policymaking and communications, particularly on enhancing inputs to policymaking
  • provide a structured and transparent framework for MPC members’ direct interaction with market contacts. This interaction will ensure that all MPC members have access to the same information and views at the same time.

Please fill out the form below describing your role, experience and suitability:

MPG Application Form

The application window will be open until 25 July. After this, the Bank will review all applications and select 16 members to join the MPG.

Selection criteria

Knowledge and experience:

  • market participant members should have a broad and deep financial market expertise that ensures appropriate coverage across monetary policy issues
  • market participant members are not expected to bring specialists with them to MPG; instead they should be knowledgeable about the subject matter and/or be briefed on topic areas before the meeting. Members are also not allowed to send alternates if they are unable to attend a meeting

Resources:

  • it is important to be able to commit sufficient time and resources. The commitment will include in-person and active attendance to the meetings that market participant members are invited to attend (each will be expected to attend one to three meetings each year, with dates flagged well in advance), as well as the possibility of preparing to give spoken remarks to one of the agenda items
  • participating individuals will be required to engage with the Bank’s Market Intelligence operation more broadly, which could include firm level engagement in the Market Participants Survey and/or market intelligence gathering

Diversity:

  • aligned with the Bank’s Meeting Varied People strategy, the MPG encourages diversity of thought among its members, for discussions to reflect a rich variety of knowledge and experiences. This will also be achieved through diversity in the types of market participant member’s institutions
