Appointment at the Bank of England

Charles Bean, Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, has been appointed to succeed John Vickers as Chief Economist and Executive Director of the Bank responsible for Monetary Analysis and Statistics.

Charles Bean will succeed Mr Vickers as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, and will join the Bank when Mr Vickers takes up his appointment as Director General of Fair Trading.

Sir Edward George, Governor of the Bank, said "We are sorry that we have to lose John Vickers in the Autumn but we wish him well in his new role. We are delighted to welcome Charlie Bean, who is very well known to the Bank and in the monetary policy field, and we look forward to him joining us."
