  • This programme is designed for students who have recently graduated and are looking to start their career at the heart of the UK's economy.
     

    This could be right for you if you are:

    • keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
    • eager to obtain unique insight into the workings of the UK's central bank
    • looking to build your network and pursue a career at the Bank of England

    To apply, you must:

    • be expecting or have achieved a 2.1 degree classification; there are specific degree requirements for the economist and postgraduate streams
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from three A levels (or equivalent)

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank. You will get an idea of the range of specialist roles across the organisation. You will also receive training sessions, which focus on crucial skills to develop as a central banker. We hire graduates who are driven and intent on learning while building their career with us.

    In your first 12 months, you will take part in a foundation year covering the Bank's breadth of work. In your second year, you will have the opportunity to study for further qualifications including at master's level.

    Operations

    As our most versatile stream, this is open to students from all degree disciplines. If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    • Payments 
    • Markets
    • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
    • Banking 
    • Financial Market Infrastructure 
    • Prudential Policy 
    Risk

    If you are interested in developing technical expertise in areas such as stress testing or wider market risks, this is the stream for you.

    For the Risk stream, London and Leeds opportunities are available. If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    London 

    • Financial Market Infrastructure
    • Supervisory Risk Specialists

    Leeds

    • Supervisory Risk Specialists 
    • Prudential Policy 
    Data

    Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective.

    For the Data stream, London and Leeds opportunities are available. If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    London

    • Data Analytics and Transformation
    • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

    Leeds

    • Authorisations, Regulatory Technology and International Supervision
    Technology

    If you are interested in gaining hands-on experience with our technical experts and getting involved in innovative projects, this stream could be for you. You do not need a degree in computer science to apply. 

    You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

    • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
    • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
    • developing and presenting reports on change projects
    Supervision

    We welcome people with all subject backgrounds to become a supervisor. Your role would involve supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies.

    For the Supervision stream, London and Leeds opportunities are available. If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas:

    Postgraduate

    If you are completing a master's degree in economics or finance, this stream could be for you.

    If you are successful, we could allocate you to one of the following areas: 

    • Financial Stability Strategy and Risk
    • Prudential Policy 
  • This programme is designed for students who have recently completed a numerical degree and are looking to start their career as an actuary at the heart of the UK economy. 

    This could be right for you if you are:

     

    • keen to learn how we apply maths and statistics to real-world problems
    • eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK’s central bank
    • looking to build your network and find out more about career opportunities at the Bank of England

    We are committed to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

     

    To apply, you must:

     

    • be expecting or have achieved a 2.1 degree in a numerical subject
    • have achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A levels (or equivalent), with maths at grade B or above
    • have less than two years relevant work experience

    What to expect

    We start by giving you an introduction to the many areas of work around the Bank. You will learn the business and technical skills you will need as you start your career. You will have the opportunity to work with the firms we regulate to make them safer and sounder. 

    As part of your role, you will learn to assess risks, prepare reports and hold firms accountable. You will also qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries. We will support you through your professional studies with study leave, funding for study and a salary increase as you progress.

  • This programme is designed for students looking to gain on-the-job experience at the heart of the UK's central bank, while working toward qualifying through a graduate solicitor apprenticeship.

    This could be right for you if you are:

    • keen to launch your legal career
    • eager to qualify as a solicitor at the UK's central bank
    • looking to build your network and find out more about career opportunities at the Bank of England

    We are committed to nurturing a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds.

    To apply, you must:

    • have GCSEs in English and maths at grade 4 (C) or above, or English and maths Functional Skills at pass
    • be predicted or have achieved one of the following: 2.1 UK law degree; or 2.1 non-law degree plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL); or a law degree from a non-UK jurisdiction plus a PGDL.
    • have not already completed LPC or SQE1&2
    • be a UK citizen or hold another residence status which meets the apprenticeship funding criteria set out by the Education and Skills Funding Agency
    • comply with any Solicitors Regulation Authority character and suitability requirements
    • for applicants who have completed a bachelor’s degree in law or Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL) more than three years prior to the start date of the programme, they must complete the Law Essential course before the programme start date.

    If you hold qualifications from educational institutions outside of the UK, you may need a statement of comparability.

    What to expect

    You will receive a bespoke induction and training programme for the Bank's trainee solicitors, as well as access to a wide range of training opportunities within the Legal Directorate. You will regularly receive training from experts from across the Bank, as well as external speakers from the Government, other regulators (such as the Financial Conduct Authority), overseas authorities and the private sector.

    We will introduce you to a unique combination of public and private law issues. We work on legal matters related to:

    • financial services regulation 
    • banking and payments
    • insolvency and restructuring
    • litigation
    • the UK's central bank

    How you could develop

    On the programme you will:

    • enrol on a paid-for course at the University of Law (ULaw) to prepare for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE1 and SQE2)
    • spend 20% of your working week studying with ULaw and 80% of your week working in Legal
    • have the opportunity to qualify as a solicitor at the UK’s central bank and you can earn as you learn
    • receive study leave around exam periods
    • complete a mix of six and twelve-month rotations across three or more divisions of the directorate – giving you experience in central banking, financial stability, enforcement and litigation, insurance and deposit takers, and EU and international
    • have access to a wide range of induction and training opportunities, and support from a highly experienced legal team

    After passing your SQE and completing work experience, you will be eligible to become a solicitor registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (subject to meeting relevant character and suitability requirements). At this point, we would welcome you to apply for jobs in the Bank as a newly qualified lawyer.
