Number of withdrawn banknotes by series exchanged or destroyed between 1 July 2009 and 31 July 2019

We publish details of a selection of requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, and the information we disclose in response.

Disclosure:

All banknotes that are returned to the Bank of England (the ‘Bank’) are deemed to have been exchanged in some form. These include banknotes that have been returned in bulk via the Note Circulation Scheme, damaged or mutilated notes that have been exchanged by our Leeds office and withdrawn notes that have been exchanged by post or at our bank counter at Threadneedle Street. Almost all of the old series banknotes are destroyed.

Below is a table listing the banknotes by series with the number of banknotes that were returned to the Bank and destroyed in each calendar year from July 2009 to July 2019.
