Numbers of genuine polymer banknotes received by the Bank of England which were misidentified as counterfeit by the public

We publish details of a selection of requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, and the information we disclose in response.

Disclosure:

The number of genuine polymer design banknotes received by the Bank of England (the ‘Bank’) which were misidentified as counterfeit was 2,568 notes for the year up to end September 2019. Damaged genuine notes are reimbursed by the Bank at face value as long as more than half of the banknote remains. For the same period, the Bank received 297,712 counterfeit notes and separately reimbursed 512,623 notes through the Bank’s mutilated (damaged) note scheme.
