The Bank’s engagement on retail payments

Our retail payments engagement forums are vital to inform our work on next generation payments ecosystem.

As part of our work on the National Payments Vision under the Retail Payments Infrastructure Board (RPIB), the Bank is convening three new forums to ensure we are capturing a broad range of experiences, expertise, and knowledge in the development of next generation retail payments infrastructure. These forums will help us build a more resilient, innovative and inclusive payments landscape for the UK.

Together, these groups represent a joined-up approach to engagement, ensuring that we hear directly from consumers and small businesses, innovators and fintechs, and experts from academia and policy.

Call for nominations

We will shortly be inviting nominations to join the following three forums: The Payments End User Forum; Payments Innovation Design Group; and the Payments Academic Advisory Group.

Applicants will be assessed against criteria, including:

  • Relevant experience in the forum’s area (end-user insight, payments innovation, or academic research);
  • ability to commit time and resources as set out in the terms of reference;
  • diversity of perspective, representing different sectors, user groups, disciplines and geographies; and
  • alignment with the purpose of the specific forum.

Forums

Payments End User Forum

The Payments End User Forum (PEUF) will focus on the needs, experiences and perspectives of those who rely on payment services every day. This includes consumers, vulnerable groups, charities, small and medium sized businesses, retailers, and representative bodies. This forum will ensure that design choices are informed by real world user needs, practical constraints, and emerging risks, helping us build systems that works for everyone.

Payments Innovation Design Group

The Payments Innovation Design Group will bring together industry innovators, including financial services firms, technology companies and fintechs, payment service providers, digital security specialists and firms working on areas such as digital wallets and open banking. This forum will support the Bank in understanding emerging opportunities, assessing design approaches, and identifying challenges as the payments ecosystem continues to evolve.

Payments Academic Advisory Group

The CBDC Academic Advisory Group has provided a rich source of discussion and debate on the key topics relevant to the Bank’s exploration of a digital pound. Given the success of the group and noting that the issues discussed have implications wider than CBDC, we are broadening the scope to encompass our wider payments work. The Payments Academic Advisory Group will continue to bring together leading academics and policy thinkers from disciplines including economics, law, behavioural science, competition, technology and innovation. Its purpose remains to support informed, evidence based discussion on the opportunities and risks shaping the future payments landscape.
