Embracing the promise of fintech

The UK economy is becoming increasingly digital with high levels of smartphone and internet penetration, a growth in e-commerce, the emergence of new technologies and an enhanced ability to capture and analyse large amounts of data. Fintech is supporting this shift by enabling new players with new business models to enter the market.  The article explores how fintech could create a more efficient, effective and resilient financial system; how new risks may emerge and how existing risks may be amplified as a result; and how the Bank is embracing fintech to support its mission to promote the good of the people of the UK by maintaining monetary and financial stability.

The report summarises the main issues raised by participants at the 17th Monetary Policy Roundtable hosted by the Bank of England and the Centre for Economic Policy Research in November 2018. There were two topics of discussion: Current issues around unconventional monetary policy and the outlook for equilibrium interest rates.
